Alta Whale Safari
Discover the wildlife and dramatic Arctic landscape of the Altafjord on a 2.5-hour whale and wildlife safari aboard M/S Jektøy.
Whales, porpoises, sea eagles and Arctic seabirds all make their home in and around the fjord. What we encounter changes with the season, weather and wildlife activity that day. Nature does not follow a timetable – and that is part of the experience.
From the outdoor viewing areas, you can take in the fresh Arctic air and uninterrupted views across the fjord. Prefer to stay warm? M/S Jektøy has heated indoor lounges with large panoramic windows, so you can follow the journey in comfort. Blankets are also available on board.
Along the way, our onboard audio guide introduces you to Alta’s history, coastal culture and the landscape surrounding the fjord. When whales, sea eagles or other interesting wildlife are spotted, the captain provides live updates from the bridge.
During the darker months, there may even be a chance to experience the Northern Lights above the fjord. Neither whales nor the Northern Lights can be guaranteed – but when nature decides to put on a show, you are already in the right place.
A small kiosk on board offers snacks and hot and cold drinks during the cruise.

Good to know
Wildlife sightings and Northern Lights cannot be guaranteed. The sailing route may be adjusted according to weather, sea conditions and recent wildlife observations.
Warm clothing and suitable footwear are recommended, even though the vessel has heated indoor lounges. Guests who are prone to seasickness should consider taking suitable medication before departure.
A real Arctic fjord experience
This is not a staged wildlife attraction. Every departure is different because the Altafjord decides what it wants to show us that day.
Sometimes it is whales. Sometimes sea eagles, porpoises and Arctic birdlife steal the show. And on a dark winter day, the Northern Lights may decide to join us too.
