Why a Sightseeing Cruise might be the best option
Are you planning your Oslo adventure and wondering how to get to the famous Fram Museum on the Bygdøy Peninsula? Here’s a helpful guide comparing your options including one that turns your journey into an unforgettable experience.
But why to visit Bygdøy part of Oslo? If you love beautiful landscapes, beaches but also love to have cosy cafées, big and interactive museums that are very friendly towards families with young children, this is a must visit spot in any time of a year. Apart from the Fram Museum you can visit also Kon-Tiki Museum and Norwegian Maritime Museum.
🚍 Option 1: By Bus – The Budget-Friendly Way
You can take red Bus number 30 directly to to the last stop called Bygdøynes. It’s reliable and frequent and the bus stop is right in front of all museums. You can also check the route from different bus stops at the Ruter route planner here.
- Price: 42 NOK (one way adult ticket)
- Buy tickets: In advance via the Ruter app or at kiosks like Narvesen or 7-Eleven
- Travel time: Around 25 minutes from Oslo S station
Downside: Not scenic, limited to just transport, can be crowded.
🛥️ Option 2: Sightseeing Cruise with Museum Stop + Oslo Fjord Views
Why not combine getting there with a beautiful experience on the Oslofjord?
Our sightseeing cruise departs twice daily from Oslo city center and stops directly at Bygdøy in front of the Fram Museum and Kon-Tiki Museum. The cruise runs all year round, so it is not limited only to summer. Combine a cruise with museum visits and board again with the same ticket in the afternoon to get back to the city center. Our ships are fully electric, meaning this is also a zero-emission transport option.
- Departure times from Oslo Akker Bryge: 11:00 and 13:30
- Stop at Bygdøy: 12:45 and 15:15
- Return to Oslo city center: Hop back on the next cruise using the same ticket
- Benefit: You can explore both museums and enjoy a roundtrip Oslofjord cruise in one ticket.
- Tickets: Available from 379 NOK at Trollcruise.no here.
- Recommended for: First-time visitors, families, and anyone wanting to make the most of the fjord
🚲 Option 3: By bicycle – the most ecological way
Are you feeling active? You can also use your own bicycle or rent a bicycle to get to Bygdøy. It takes approximately 25 minutes to ride a bike from the Oslo S central station and you can use the promenade with bike lanes towards Frognerkilen. It has an amazing view on parked boats and yachts and the ride itself has only slight uphill section at Bygdøy. Check also rates for renting Oslo bicycles here as they offer multiple pickup points and 72h flat rate for as low as 119 NOK. You will also find a return point right in front of museums at Bygdøy.
- Price: 119 NOK flat rate for 72 hours
- Rent: In advance via the Oslobysykkel app
- Travel time: Around 25 minutes from Oslo city center
Downside: Riding a bike is dependant on a good weather.
🚗 Option 4: By car – not so recommended
If you have a car or a camping van it seems like a good idea to travel to Bygdøy directly. However, it is not so recommended. There is only one small parking place (see the picture) for a few cars in front of museums which tends to fill very early and price rates are very expensive (not to count 660 NOK fines for late exit). The surrounding streets are residents only and there is no free parking. It is much better to park further away in the city and use different means of transportations if possible.
Downside: Not many parking spots available on-site. Expensive parking and you have to pay toll gates too.
Why Visit the Fram Museum?
Located at Bygdøynesveien 39, the Fram Museum showcases the world’s strongest wooden ship, Fram, used in historic Arctic and Antarctic expeditions. It’s a must-see for adventure lovers and families with children for its interactive features.
- Tickets can be bought directly at the website here.
- Admission: Adults 180 NOK, Children 70 NOK
- Opening hours: Usually 10:00–17:00 (9:30 – 18:00 in summer)
Verdict: Cruise, bus or a bike?
| Option | Price | Experience | Flexibility |
| Bus | 42 NOK | Just transport | Frequent |
| Sightseeing Cruise | From 379 NOK | Transport + Oslofjord views | 2 departures daily, includes return |
| Bicycle | 119 NOK | Transport + landscape views | Anytime |
| Car | Not recommended | Difficult and expensive parking | Anytime |
If you want just the cheapest way there, the bus is fine. If you are feeling adventureous, you can ride a bike. But if you want to turn your visit into a scenic and memorable Oslo experience, the sightseeing cruise is 100% worth it – especially since it stops directly at the Fram Museum and allows time to explore.
Life hack: Use the cruise to visit both Fram and Kon-Tiki Museums, grab lunch at the waterfront, and return relaxed with stunning views of Oslo’s skyline.
